Upcoming mayoral and deputy mayoral elections for Mangalore City Corporation

Details of the election:

Mangalore City Corporation will soon be holding elections for a new mayor and deputy mayor. The current mayor, Premananda Shetty's term ends on 10th of March 2023, and the deputy mayor's position has been vacant since the resignation of Mohammed Kunjathbail. A special council meeting has been called for March 8th 2023 to elect new office holders.

BJP and Congress council members clashed in the council hall:

The meeting is expected to be contentious, as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress are both fielding candidates for both the mayor and deputy mayor positions. In the 60-member council, the BJP has 35 members, while the Congress has 23. The Janata Dal (Secular) has one member, and there is one independent member. During the council meeting on Monday, there was a heated exchange of words between BJP and Congress councilors. The Congress had alleged that the BJP was trying to influence the election by offering bribes to its members. The BJP, in turn, accused the Congress of trying to stall the proceedings of the meeting.

The Mayor election Candidates:

BJP has fielded Vedavyas Kamath, and Congress party candidate is A.C. Vinay Raj.

The Deputy Mayor election Candidates:

The BJP candidate is Sudhir Shetty Kannur, and Muhammed Muzammil is the Congress candidate. The outcome of the election is likely to have a significant impact on the functioning of the Mangalore City Corporation. The new mayor and deputy mayor will be responsible for overseeing the city's development and governance. The election is also being seen as a test of strength between the BJP and the Congress ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka.
