Canada Defeats Mexico in World Cup Qualifying

A Convincing Victory

WEB That's a scenario that felt unthinkable just a few months ago, but it's now a reality after a convincing 2-1 victory over regional power Mexico on Thursday night at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. WEB Cyle Larin's brace was enough to help Canada hold on to a 2-1 win over Mexico in World Cup qualifying. With the win, Canada jumped to first place in the CONCACAF standings with 16 points from eight games.

A Record-Breaking Performance

WEB A record-tying night from Cyle Larin not only propelled Canada to a 2-1 win over Mexico on Tuesday but put the Canadians at the top of their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group. Larin's two goals give him 13 for his country, tying him with Dwayne De Rosario for the most all-time by a Canadian men's player.

The win was Canada's first over Mexico in a World Cup qualifier since 1997 and just their second-ever victory over their North American rivals in any competition. It was also just the third time Canada has defeated Mexico in a match played in Canada, with the previous victories coming in 1957 and 1985.

The victory puts Canada in a strong position to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. With four games remaining in the CONCACAF qualifying round, Canada needs just four points to secure a spot in the intercontinental playoff, which would give them a chance to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
