The album's title and release date were revealed shortly after billboards appeared in various locations. The billboards featured a white door opening into darkness, with the words "Hit Me Hard and Soft" and "July 30, 2021" emblazoned across them. Billie Eilish also shared a photo of the billboards on Instagram with the caption, "It's coming."
